Bernie and the American Youth

So far we have seen four states vote, Iowa, a virtual tie, New Hampshire, a win for Sanders, and then Nevada and South Carolina, both losses, but amongst all four there has been one clear win for Sanders; Sanders has the majority of young voters across the board. Millennials now are a larger majority than the baby boomer, but there is still a hard truth that comes with having the youth carrying Sanders on their shoulders.

I am 19 years old, this will be my first election voting. I am registered to vote in North Carolina so my ballot will be cast on March 15th, but there is still a looming problem for Sanders, and that's that many of the people my age aren't like me. They aren't politically involved and they feel like since they're young they have other problems.

We care about other things, social problems, partying, our little dramas, and we often put these things above things like politics. Many people my age might post tweets or Facebook posts about their support for Sanders, because they want to create the image of support, and even though that is good, it is not enough.

I have many friends who claim they support Sanders, yet they "forgot" to register to vote or simply thought it wasn't important enough for them to take the time. At this point in North Carolina, it is too late now for them to register to vote in the primaries.

Clearly there are laws in place that make it harder to register to vote in some states, and North Carolina is one of them, but in general there seems to just be a lot of younger potential voters choosing to not get involved.

If every young voter who claimed to support Sanders actually went out and voted, the poll numbers would be very different then they are now, the results might have even been better towards Sanders in the first four states as well.

It's not easy to convince youths that voting is important, but the reason many of us already back Sanders is because we have come to realize that he stands for the things that will make the world a better place for us. He stands behind progressive reform, not old traditions from the past that have been proven failures. Sanders wants to leave a better world for me, my future family, and the future families of America.

It's time for the youth to realize their power, there are still many states left and there is still time for many people to register to vote. Every vote matters, and if YOU think because your friend is voting you don't have to, realize this, there are probably a few million people with the same mentality. This is the future of the country you call home, every candidate has drastically different policies, and your vote will decide how your future is molded. Don't miss out, vote for Bernie Sanders while you still can.
